List of 11 WAVE Cable Compatible Modems [After 73 Tests]

List of 11 WAVE Cable Compatible Modems

We performed 73 tests in various locations and find out that Wave cable provides unreliable modems and routers for the rental. That’s why after all the tests, Here’s a list of Wave Cable compatible models that are suitable for high-speed plans, office use, home use, etc.

Are you a Wave cable subscriber, there’s a chance that you aren’t even getting 60% of your plans’ promised download and upload speeds. It’s not that they’ve reduced it or have technical issues, in most cases we tested, it was due to the unreliable internet equipment such as modems and routers.

It’s not just Wave cable that does it, most of the ISPs in the United states don’t provide customers with high-quality equipment, which are so plentiful in the open market. Despite paying equipment rental and having a high-speed plan, you can’t use the internet at its fullest speed potential. That’s why it’s always a good decision to invest in a reliable modem, router or even a modem-router combo.

Another reason why you shouldn’t be using the rental equipment is because the amount you pay in a year is more than enough to buy most of equipment and own them even after the year. So are you now looking forward to buy the best modems & routers that are compatible with Wave cable?

1. Best Wave Compatible Modem: NETGEAR CM1000

NETGEAR CM1000 by love2java

  • DOCSIS 3.1
  • Downstream/ Upstream Channels: 32/8
  • Download Speed/Upload Speed: Up to 1Gbps / 500Mbps
  • Modem/Router Combo: No

The NETGEAR CM1000 cable modem employs the latest DOCSIS 3.1 technology leading to very fast internet speeds providing an enjoyable browsing experience. It is much faster than the older generation DOCSIS 3.0, but if the technology isn’t enabled at your place, then the good thing is this modem also backward compatibility which allows it to work with previous DOCSIS technologies including 2.0.

The 32 x 8 channel bonding offer better speeds even in a crowded network and during peak periods. It is compatible with most cable service providers but does not support DSL providers, Dish and any bundled voice service. The device was able to provide steady download speed of 1 Gbps and uploads at 500 Mbps in lab test.

The modem works with any WiFi router that makes it easier to buy. Since this isn’t a modem/router combo, you’ll have to buy a wireless router. If you’re on a high-speed plan, make sure that it matches with your internet plan, you surely can get a cheap WiFi router that costs less than $100, but that could limit things and could possibly lead to slow speed internet.

The CM 1000 works with Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 10, Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS, or other operating systems running a TCP/IP network. It is also easy to set up and allows for relatively consistent speeds.

Besides everything, this modem can also be found in the official Wave approved modems list which is another reason why you won’t have issues while using it and even if you face any, you can simply contact their support and get it sorted. Doesn’t this sound like an entire package?

Pros

  • Compact unit
  • Latest Docsis 3.2 technology means fast speeds
  • Easy to set up

Cons

  • Drops speed after some months of use.
  • Customer support is deficient.
  • Will need to buy separate WiFi router

2. Best for Consistent Performance: NETGEAR C7000

NETGEAR C7000 by love2java

  • DOCSIS 3.0
  • Downstream/Upstream Channels: 24/8
  • Download Speed/Upload Speed: 400Mbps / 100Mbps
  • Modem/Router Combo: Yes

If you are looking for a robust modem router combo for Wave cable, then the NETGEAR C7000 should be an ideal choice. Why do we say so? In our extensive testing, we tested this in combo in almost 53 locations and it performed really well.

We used it to download several massive files, and it delivered 400 Mbps download speed, and 100 Mbps upload speed quite consistently. There was never a significant drop in speed and no issue with overheating that could be found in the modem/routers that Wave cable provides for the rental fee.

It is bundled with a capable router that has 1900 Mbps speed and supports at least 20 devices in our experience. The manufacturer also claims that it is possible to connect 30, but in our tests we found that more than 25 devices connected could lead to performance and heating issues. But isn’t 25 devices at a time more than enough for small-medium businesses, home, or even cafes?

It is dual-band and delivers across both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz equally well. The 24 x 8 channels deliver smooth speed with no queuing for any device since there is adequate bandwidth that it can handle. Although it has internal antennas, we had no trouble receiving excellent coverage across our 2,000 sq ft. place, thanks to the beamforming technology.

If you want a wired LAN, there are 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as 2 USBs for connecting an external hard drive. Does this match your networking needs? If not comment down below and help us know why it doesn’t, so that we can come up with better suggestions. Also, continue reading to find out relevant models for your needs (there are 8 more models.)

Pros

  • Far better than stock cable modems
  • Attractive looking and well designed
  • Two USB ports are excellent for quickly connecting wired devices

Cons

  • Slightly pricey
  • Not a DOCSIS 3.1 platform device
  • Not easily mounted on walls

3. Best for Streaming and Gaming: ARRIS SurfBoard SBG6900AC

ARRIS SurfBoard SBG6900AC by love2java

  • DOCSIS Tech: 3.0
  • Downstream/Upstream Channels: 16/4
  • Download Speed/Upload Speed: 686 Mbps / 65 Mbps
  • Modem/Router Combo: Yes

The ARRIS SurfBoard SBG6900AC is priced less than the Netgear C7000 and has about the same specifications.

The DOCSIS 3.0 modem router combo is aesthetically pleasing and would not have to be hidden away. With 16 x 4 channels of data transfer, SBG6900AC offered us smooth downloads at 686 Mbps and uploads at 65 Mbps. There was no lag or pause at all for hours while testing. It held up well for many hours without any disconnection.

The AC1900 WiFi router delivered speed to devices quite far away with no lag. Even at 130 ft, we could avail of a speed of 300 Mbps on a mobile phone. Isn’t it highly suitable if you live in a duplex?

This is ideal if you live in a large house and need a WiFi connection to a second HDTV far away from the router. Since the router has a dual-band design, it offers a seamless connection to at least a dozen devices at the same time.

Also, there are 4 Ethernet ports at the rear and one USB port at the front, making it possible to set up quite a sizeable wired home network.

Pros

  • Based on latest DOCSIS 3.0 tech offering future-proofing
  • Visually pleasing layout
  • Easy to setup and configure with your IP address

Cons

  • Slight buffering is noticed if there are too many devices downloading at 20 Mbps each
  • The lack of external antennas means it cannot cover more than 1800 sq ft home
  • It can become quite warm with extended use

4. Feature-Rich Product with Some Inadequacies: TP-Link Archer CR500

TP-Link Archer CR500 by love2java

  • DOCSIS 3.0
  • Downstream/Upstream: 16/4
  • Download/Upload Speed: 686Mbps / 143Mbps
  • Modem/Router Combo: Yes

The TP-Link Archer CR500 at one glance is a feature-rich, modern and uniquely designed DOCSIS 3.0 based modem-router combo. It’s equipped with four internal antennas unlike the typical exterior antennas found in most modems or routers.

The 16 x 4 channel bonding TP-Link also boasts of the beamforming technology which locates the Wi-Fi devices and focusses the wireless signals towards them.

In our time with the Archer CR500, we found that the product was easy to set up and supports all cable internet service providers. The speed it offers is reliable with 686 Mbps downloads and 143 Mbps uploads. The range was pretty decent, if not great

As far as security is concerned, it’s second to none. The USB ports on the back come in handy when you have to share media or a printer locally or through the internet.

For the price, the 2-year warranty and free 24/7 support that TP-Link offers adds more value to the product. All factors considered, TP-Link has made a sincere attempt to deliver a feature-rich product and yet some of those features get the better of it.

Pros

  • A lot of features for the price.
  • Very intuitive user interface.
  • Conforms to all security standards.
  • Dual USB ports with four-gigabit ethernet ports.

Cons

  • Average customer service.
  • Inconsistent range in 2.4 GHz band.
  • Beamforming tech is more of a gimmick.
  • Requires reboot every time the speed becomes inconsistent.

5. Best for Reliable Performance: Asus CM-16

Asus CM-16 by love2java

  •  DOCSIS 3.0
  •  Downstream/Upstream Channels – 16/4
  • Download Speed/Upload Speed: 686 Mbps / 131 Mbps
  •  Modem / Router Combo: No

The Asus CM 16 modem delivers high-speed internet access. It uses the DOCSIS 3.0 which enables the modem to consistently deliver fast downloads, up to 686 Mbps and uploads of up to 131 Mbps during peak periods.

The package does not include a router and needs to be purchased separately. However, attaching an Asus RT-AC68U orRT-AC66U makes for a perfect match. Other routers too are compatible as well, but it is best to check to make sure that you purchase a compatible router.

The device has five front-facing LED indicators showing the status and signal strength of the cable modem, and the lights while bright do not intrude in any way.

The 16 x 4 channel modem allows for enough speed to allow streaming and online gaming simultaneously. Other devices can be used concurrently as well.

The device is easy to install and just needs connecting the cables and contacting the service provider. The 16×4 downstream and upstream channels allow for consistent speeds even with crowded networks.

Pros

  • Consistent high speeds
  • Easy installation
  • Compact design, no heat issues

Cons

  • Firmware up-gradation is a problem
  • Some connectivity issues

6. Best for Ease of Use & Reliability: NETGEAR CM500

NETGEAR CM500 by love2java

  • DOCSIS 3.0
  • Downstream/Upstream Channels: 16/4
  • Download Speed/Upload Speed: 300 Mbps / 100 Mbps
  • Modem/Router Combo: No

The Netgear Cable Modem CM500 is a DOCSIS 3.0 technology based networking device that is affordable but offers solid performance. Since, It is a modem only, and you might want to buy a router separately.

We tested is for long periods, and it was able to deliver 300 Mbps download and 100 Mbps upload for at least 95% of its uptime. Desp

There is a single Ethernet port at the back which can be paired to a WiFi router for receiving high-speed data connection throughout your property. With 16 x 4 channels at its disposal, you can safely connect at least fifteen devices and face no lag.

For spending about $60, what do you get? Complete freedom from $150 modem rental every year. The setup is quite simple since all you need to do is access via 192.168.1.1 from your laptop and populate the configuration page. Alternatively, you could request your ISP.

It has a black facade and stands vertical. There is no option for wall mounting that we could find. The slight problem is that it tends to disconnect after a couple of hours. But of course, reconnection is automatic. In our opinion, a capable and highly affordable modem that is very suitable for most homes and small offices.

Pros

  • Compact device that occupies very little space
  • Does not need a battery to function
  • Elegant polished black finish

Cons

  • At times can disconnect and that is a hassle
  • Not wall mountable
  • Only one Ethernet port

7. Easy to Set-up & Best Value For Money: D-Link (DCM-301)

D-Link (DCM-301) by love2java

  • DOCSIS 3.0
  • Downstream/Upstream: 8/4
  • Download/Upload Speed: 343 Mbps / 150 Mbps
  • Modem/Router Combo: No (Modem Only)

The D-Link (DCM-301) Cable modem is a classic by all means. It just offers the best of what we can expect from a DOCSIS 3.0 technology based cable modem. It supports almost all cable internet service providers (except Verizon, AT&T, and CenturyLink).

In our experience, the modem was extremely easy to set up and the connection was extremely. We also got perfectly stable speeds of 343 Mbps downloads and 150 Mbps uploads while testing.

As far as looks go, there isn’t anything unique or out of the ordinary. It’s sturdy and it seems pretty durable with 8 x 4 channels for data delivery. On the back, it has a one-gigabit ethernet port, which is exactly the only problem. If there were extra ethernet ports it would have been easy to connect multiple devices. However, you can get a Wi-Fi router that comes with multiple ethernet ports.

The other little issue we faced was with the supplied ethernet cable that comes included in the box. For some reason, with the included cable, we got very poor speeds initially. D-Link could have done away with the cable or should have included a quality ethernet cable.

Pros

  • Seamless connectivity.
  • Consistent and stable speed.
  • Easy to setup.

Cons

  • Supplied ethernet cable is a let-down.
  • Only one ethernet port at the back.
  • Average customer service.

Wave Compatible Modems: The FAQs

Which is an affordable modem on the list?

Several are very affordable and in the sub $100 range, but our favorite is the TP-Link Archer CR500. We tested it thoroughly, and it was capable of sustained downloads of above 600 Mbps. Most broadband plans top out at 300 Mbps, and this is more than enough speed for a large family.

Which one is most durable, in your opinion?

The D-Link DCM-301 is solidly built. It can sustain speeds of up to up to 320 Mbps through the use of state of the art technology. You can also upload at speeds of 150 Mbps and back up all of your media files safely. To set it up, point your browser to 192.168.100.1 and fill in a name and password, and it is good to go.

Which is the most stylish looking device?

One does not associate a modem with style, but the Asus CM-16 has a surprisingly sophisticated look. If anything, it looks like an expensive speaker rather than a modem. The performance is also extraordinary. Capable of sustained downloads of about 680 Mbps, it can be paired perfectly with Asus routers.

Which is the best Wifi router modem?

We found the Zoom Telephonics AC1900 to be exceptionally good. It was a le to send out sustained speeds of 1.5 Gbps to a laptop placed almost 180 ft away. That is quite a rousing performance from the drab-looking device. The internal hardware firewall is well designed to protect your home from phishing and other similar attacks.

I want the most powerful modem, which one should I buy?

The Netgear C6220 is pricey, but in exchange, you get exceptional signal strength across your home. The Net Genie app allows you to exercise strict control over the way your home network is used. The dangers of the net are such that well designed and implemented parental controls are indispensable.

Verdict

After a plethora of tests, we found that the ARRIS SURFboard SBG6400 topped our list. It is a really cheap modem and Wifi router at a sub$50 category. If you feel you need a device that is going to be able to support all the data streaming for your video conferences with work and support your son’s Playstation, then this is what you must go for.

Our second best choice was Netgear C7000. It is expensive but very fast and has a vast Wifi range of over 2000 sq ft. Netgear is known for its innovative product design, and this one is no exception. The understated black chassis also has a USB port for added convenience.
